Forest Forums for Finnish and Russian decision-makers

During 2011, Finnish Forest Association together with administration and the forest sector organized three Forest Forums for Finnish and Russian decision-makers.

The first forum was organized on March 2-4, the second on June 7-9 and the third on October 19-21. People invited to the events represented governmental and regional authorities and decision makers in business life, NGOs, research, education and the media.

The objective of the Forest Forums is to provide a joint platform to finding solutions to improve the competitiveness of northern forestry and promote the creation of a common Finnish-Russian understanding on the efficient and sustainable utilisation of the boreal forest resources. Utilizing the opportunities offered by forests for developing the society as a whole in Russia calls for interaction, collaboration and trust between the different sectors.

There is an obvious need for fresh, new dialogue in the forest sector, both within Russia and between the two countries. Finland and Russia have a common interest to defend and reinforce the competitiveness of the forest sector in the boreal zone, because in recent years most of the new investments have gone to countries with rapidly growing forests.

In the summit held in St. Petersburg in October 2009 the Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen made the initiative to introduce the Forest Academy for Decision Makers concept in Russia. In May 2010 the Finnish Prime Minister presented an invitation to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin concerning forums to be organised in Finland.
