In brief
Forest Academy for Decision-Makers is a course and discussion forum on forest issues, directed at top-level decision-makers throughout the Finnish society.

It aims at strengthening the participants’ abilities to understand and utilize the multiple potentials related to forests in support of societal development. This is done by evaluating the state of the forest sector, and examining alternative paths of development through cross-sectoral dialogue.

The forums are primarily aimed at decision-makers and opinion leaders, who work outside the forest sector, but who have an interest or ability to influence forest issues. In addition, they are participated by persons representing the forest sector.

In each forum, about 30 invited participants convene for four days for seminars, site visits, discussions and group work. During the seminar session, the participants focus on the economic, social and environmental challenges of the forest sector both globally and nationally. During a subsequent field trip, the group focuses on the practical dimensions of these challenges. Finally, strategic discussions are held in support of ongoing forest-related policy processes.

In order to enhance cross-sectoral dialogue and relations, Forest Academy forums utilise a specific communication concept and working methods.

This communication tool was customised in 2005. The product is called Forest Academy – Programme for Increasing Dialogue on Forests in Society. It offers a communication concept aimed at enhancing cross-sectoral dialogue and relations between the forest sector and rest of society. Latvia was the first country to purchase the Forest Academy communication program. Latvia's forest sector organised its first Forest Academy event in 2008. (Read more)
